The Debrief: Rawlinson's dream start, Shrimpton downs Darlington, Pat Jones latest, and Chester legend calls it a day
The Blues kept themselves in the hunt for the play-offs with a dramatic win
Well, that was fun.
Fin Shrimpton continued his trend of being Chester’s go-to guy for when they needed a breakthrough as he notched his sixth goal in seven games for the Blues as the Connell Rawlinson regime got off to the perfect start with a 2-1 home success over play-off-chasing Darlington at the Deva Stadium.
Shrimpton fired home from close range in the eighth minute of added time on Saturday to secure a huge maiden win for Rawlinson on game one of his interim spell, and put Chester in the conversation for the play-off race with nine games remaining.
Dylan Mottley-Henry had handed Chester a 10th minute lead over former Blues boss Steve Watson’s Quakers, before a second-half header from Tom Lees on 64 minutes from a corner had levelled matters.
It was a grandstand finish to a game that marked the last of veteran Chester defender Kevin Roberts’ career, with the 36-year-old calling time on his playing career after the final whistle, the popular right-back, who came through the youth ranks to become a professional with Chester City before spells at Cambridge United, FC Halifax Town and Wrexham sandwiched a return to the Deva in 2019, to take up a physiotherapist position with EFL League Two side Fleetwood Town.
