When it came to planning for the 2026/27 National League North campaign, Phil Parkinson knew that there would be some elements of his squad that fit in the ‘project’ box.
Given the size of the fan base, the club and its proud history, there is an expectation of success at this level of football. Four play-off appearances, including a play-off final defeat, have shown that competing is very much achievable.
But budget size determines much. There are clubs at this level of football and below who can turn on the tap when additional resources are required to make a deal happen. For Chester, the model means that everything has to be optimised and every last drop of juice squeezed out of what is possible.
